For 27 years, Paul Winter has performed winter solstice concerts in New York's Cathedral of St. John the Divine, the largest Gothic cathedral in the world.
In 2004, NPR's John Schaefer presented an introduction to Paul Winter's music, followed by a complete presentation of the performance. Guest performers, Dmitri Pokrovsky Ensemble and African mbira master Chris Berry.

In 2007, Schaefer also narrated and hosted a presentation of the solstice concert, in two one-hour parts. Guest performers, Brazilian singer Renato Braz and double-reed master Paul McCandless.
